Weinberg, further thoughts

  • She seems to be assuming this is a model situation--
grow basil ... make pesto (external point)
pump gas ... drive your car  (external point)
go to law school ... work as a lawyer (external point)
  • Applying this model to leading a life, she discovers a problem
leading your life as a whole .... ______________ [what's the external point?]
  • Objection in the two replies
    • It's a choice whether to think of your life as one big enterprise; it's not inevitable. (reply 2)
    • If you do think of it that way, there needn't be an external point (reply 1)
    • there's some end to all that we do (telos)
    • whatever our end, achieving it makes us characteristically human
    • it's eudaimonia -- happiness, flourishing, through moral and intellectual virtue
    • flourishing is HOW you live your life
    • it's not external to your life
    • there is no external point...and that's ok...nothing to be sad about!
